Researchers predict a very active 2022 hurricane season

Posted: Friday, July 8, 2022. 9:54 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Researchers maintain their prediction for an above-average 2022 hurricane season, Loop reports.

Researchers from the Colorado State University (CSU) predict an estimated 10 hurricanes, 20 named storms, and 5 major hurricanes for this year’s hurricane season.

The extended forecast was released on Thursday and also anticipates La Niña to persist throughout the remainder of the hurricane season.

“We anticipate an above-normal probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean,” forecasters noted.

In addition, the researchers say that through information obtained in early July, this Atlantic hurricane season will have well above the 1991 to 2020 average activity.

As of July 6, 3 named storms have been recorded, Alex, Bonnie, and Colin.

Experts also shared that most of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean now have above-normal sea surface temperatures.
