By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Can the Smallpox vaccine protect you against Monkeypox? There have been several claims that it could be used to combat the viral disease, Yahoo reports.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared Monkeypox, a public health emergency.

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that as of August 2, there were 25,391 cases of Monkeypox reported globally.

The CDC notes that Monkeypox is closely related to the virus that causes smallpox.

The WHO and the CDC have published data showing that the smallpox vaccine is 85% effective in preventing Monkeypox infection.

In July, the CDC began allowing the ACAM2000 smallpox vaccine to be used as a vaccine against monkeypox.

And, the JYNNEOS vaccine has been approved by U.S. health officials since September 2019 for use against smallpox and Monkeypox.

The CDC urges everyone to take steps to protect themselves from contracting Monkeypox.
