International News: Nicaraguan Government orders closure of 7 Catholic radio stations

Posted: Wednesday, August 3, 2022. 11:41 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, the Government of Nicaragua ordered the closure of 7 Catholic radio stations that are linked to a Bishop who has been critical of President Daniel Ortega, Reuters report.

Bishop Rolando Alvarez announced the closures on Monday.

“All our radio stations have been closed, but they will not cancel the word of God,” Alvarez said on Twitter.

According to reports, the country’s telecommunications agency said the radio stations did not meet the technical requirements to be on air.

The Nicaraguan President has been condemned internationally for leading a political crackdown in the country.

In addition, videos on social media showed that authorities in Nicaragua fired shots in the air before taking control of the parish and the radio station in Sebaco.

The authorities also cut off the electricity, injured 2 parishioners, and detained several young people who had responded to a Priest’s call for help.
