Brave taxi driver escapes after being kidnapped and robbed

By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a daring kidnapping and robbery perpetrated on taxi driver Bruce Mangar of Belize City earlier today.

Mangar reported his ordeal to police at Mahogany Street police station after hitchhiking back to Belize City from approximately mile 11 on the George Price Highway.

Around 9:30 this morning, Thursday, a Hispanic woman in camouflage long pants and light-colored blouse engaged him to pick up some bags. She directed him to a dead-end street south of Hibiscus Street where she got out, saying she was getting the bags.

However, two dark-skinned men who were dressed in battle dress uniforms similar to those worn by the Belize Defence Force approached, one of whom put a gun to his head and told him “just nuh do anything stupid” while the other forced him out of the vehicle into a yard with an abandoned house. They took his wallet containing $80 and a larger sum of cash located elsewhere in the vehicle.

On entering the house he saw two men inside but he was then tied up and bound with zip ties and duct tape and returned to his vehicle in the back seat, whereupon the vehicle took off.

According to Mangar, he heard his kidnappers communicating with someone via telephone, who reportedly told them that there was no police checkpoint at Mile 4 Philip Goldson Highway and that he was at Mile 8.

Thereafter the vehicle stopped and he was released except for his blindfold and walked through bushes to a tree where he was bound again. He was told to wait for an hour to free himself, but he was able to get out of his restraints after 15 minutes and walk out to the road side, where he hitched a ride back to the City.
