International News: Dog tests positive for Monkeypox in 1st suspected case of human-to-pet transmission

Posted: Tuesday, August 16, 2022. 9:54 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A 4-year-old Italian greyhound has contracted Monkeypox, Yahoo reports.

A medical journal published evidence of the first suspected case of human-to-pet transmission of the monkeypox virus.

The dog lives with 2 men in France who were infected with Monkeypox and after the dog began showing symptoms including lesions and pustules on its abdomen, the pet tested positive for Monkeypox.

Through DNA testing, researchers determined the viruses infecting the two men and the dog was both monkeypox.

The owners say that they kept their dog away from other people and pets but they slept with him in their bed.

“Our findings should prompt debate on the need to isolate pets from monkeypox virus-positive individuals,” the report indicated.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned against possible human-to-pet transmission in its monkeypox guidance.

“Infected animals can spread the Monkeypox virus to people, and it is possible that people who are infected can spread the Monkeypox virus to animals through close contact,” the guidance stated.

Health experts continue to warn the public that those who are infected should avoid activities with their pets, including petting, cuddling, hugging, kissing, licking, sharing sleeping areas, and sharing food.
