Verdes arrive safely in El Salvador for Wednesday’s match against Alianza

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes arrived safely in San Salvador, El Salvador around midnight on Sunday after a 12-hour trip by road via Guatemala.

Between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Verdes had stopped in Zacapa, Guatemala to eat before moving on to the Salvadoran capital.

The Belizean football champions travelled to El Salvador for Wednesday’s return leg in the Scotiabank Concacaf League against Salvadoran champions Alianza.

Verdes are in a disadvantageous position having lost the first match 0-2 at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan last Wednesday. Verdes had held the Salvadoran club to a scoreless draw until they lost Everal Trapp to a red card in the 47’ conceding two goals after that in the 57’ and 67’.

It’s not going to be easy because they would have to beat the Salvadoran club by three goals to advance to the next quarterfinals. A 2-0 win would tie the series and force overtime. A win by two could also give them the ticket if they score more than two goals, that’s a 3-1 or 4-2 for example, at the Cuscatlán Stadium. That would be because of the away goal rule.

A win by one or a draw would not be enough. A loss would certainly not be good.

The match starts at 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
