By Aaron Humes: Former Central Regional Leader for the United Democratic Party (UDP), Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton says she will not challenge her removal in favour of defeated Fort George candidate in 2020 Melvin Hewlett, whose name was the only one put forward by the deadline for candidacy.

She maintains, as she told reporters on Wednesday, that “there were no vacancies for regional leaders, because a decision was taken by the NPC [National Party Council] on that matter as it was taken to the interim caretakers to the party. The consensus on the floor, after lots of discussion and debate, was that this motion will apply to moving forward.”

But she concedes the point because, in her words, “…we have far bigger issues to fry. The national issues are jumping out at us and we are so distracted by what is happening internally that I would not seek to force my point on the NPC when the decision has been taken…I have [my] view. The constitution of the party has a view. I will respect the consensus of the party.”

Hewlett, John Saldivar and Ivan Williams were elected regional leaders without contest despite, especially in the case of Saldivar, lingering concerns over his suitability.
