Twenty Belizeans recognized in Tribute to Belizean Patriots

By Aaron Humes: The Government has named the twenty distinguished Belizeans who were honoured at this year’s Tribute to Belizean Patriots ceremony on Sunday, September 18, at Battlefield Park in Belize City.

Awarded the Order of Distinction, third highest national award, for contributions to Community Service and Entrepreneurship is Daisy Olga Marin.

The following were awarded the Meritorious Service Award: Ivor Francisco Cacho (music); David Lacey (sports and community service); Jose Maria Asevedo (education); Paulino Elmer Rodriguez (the environment); Ray Palma (sports and community service); Diodoro Novelo (community service and agriculture); Faustino Yam (culture); Anthony Thurton, Sr. (entrepreneurship); Brigadier General (Retired) Alan Usher (service in the military); Fred Evans (sports and community service); Philip Balderamos (conservation); Rudolph Coleman (community service); Josephine Sutherland (community service); Susana Eiley (community service); and Cruz Amparo Majil (community service).

A trio were granted awards posthumously for, respectively, contributions to community service, the Public Service, medicine and culture. These are Alberto Nunez, Sr., Adelfino Vasquez and Dr Baldomino Barbosa.

The National Honours and Awards Act, 1991, provides that each year on Independence Day, or at such other times as may be deemed expedient, honours and awards may be conferred on persons, living or deceased, who have rendered outstanding and meritorious service to Belize, or who have distinguished themselves in other endeavours worthy of national recognition. They are officially awarded on behalf of the Sovereign by the Governor-General, represented this year by acting representative Stuart Leslie.
