By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize has set the three games involving playoff aspirants, Progresso, Port Layola, and Wagiya, Sunday at the same time. Going into the final match, Progresso have 17 points, Port Layola 16, and Wagiya 14.

“So as not to create any unfairness, match fixing, or any kind of anything, the PLB Executive and the Organizing Committee have decided that all three games will be played on Sunday at the same time,” said PLB General Manager Wilhelm Miguel.

“We have gotten permission from Concacaf as well to do so.”

The Altitude vs Port Layola game that was to have been played on Saturday night at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence will now be played on Sunday at 3:30 pm. The other two matches that were to have been played on Sunday at 4:00pm have been set for 3:30 pm as well. That is the Wagiya against Benque Viejo United at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga and the Progresso against San Pedro Pirates match at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk.

All three teams need a win on Sunday, but Progresso are the only team that depend only on themselves. A win secures them the fourth spot. A draw or a loss could still qualify them, but for that to happen Port would have to lose or draw.

For their part, Port can qualify if they win, and Progresso lose. A Port draw would only be good if Progresso were to lose by two goals.

For Wagiya to qualify, both Progresso and Port must lose, but they would have to overturn a -5-goal difference which translates into their having to beat Benque United by several goals and/or Progresso and Port lose big.

The fourth weekend match between Bandits and Verdes remains as scheduled for 7:30 pm on Saturday night at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. While Verdes (24 points) and San Pedro Pirates (22 points) are vying for home field advantage going into the playoffs, the PLB didn’t deem that important enough to also move the game to Sunday. But then again television rights come into play. And that’s an income the PLB cannot afford to lose.
