Ministry of Agriculture technical officers attend 3-day climate change workshop in Belize City

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) technical officers are attending a three-day workshop entitled ‘Generating Climate Change and Disaster Indicators for Policy Decision-making in Belize’ in Belize City.

MAFSE said the workshop is hosted by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Disaster Risk Management (MSDCCDRM) and the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) in partnership with the Statistics Division and the Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

One of the objectives of the workshop is to train the participants “to build selected environment, climate change, and disaster indicators and their metadata.”

Another objective is to “identify data and capacity gaps” with the goal of developing an Environmental Information System (EIS) and building a regional resilience platform.

The organizers also expect that the workshop will show the participants how to manage geospatial data in enhancing the use of environment, climate change, and disaster indicators for effective decision making.

Other participants include technical staff of national statistical offices, relevant line ministries, and other institutions that produce or use environment, climate change, and disaster statistics.
