Man caught stealing $6 worth of pint bottles from his neighbour’s car given 6-month suspended sentence

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man caught stealing a bag of empty pint bottles from out of his neighbor’s vehicle has been spared prison time.

Twenty-six-year-old Lucas Ortiz appeared in court on Friday charged with a single count of theft in relation to 24 pint bottles, a total value of $6, from out of the complainant’s vehicle, in the Lake Independence community on November 23.

Ortiz pleaded guilty, explaining that someone told him he could have the bottles, which he intended to sell to buy cigarettes. He pleaded with the court not to send him to jail and noted that he had no previous convictions.

Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser imposed a 6-month suspended sentence on him, explaining to Ortiz that he is not to be charged with any other offense while under the suspended sentence or he will go straight to jail.
