By Aaron Humes: In a decision described by editors as “the most clear-cut in memory,” Time magazine today named President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky alongside “the spirit of Ukraine” as 2022 Person of the Year, the BBC reports.

Often taken as an award although the magazine says it was not meant to be one, the recognition goes to an event or person deemed to have had the most influence on global events over the past 12 months.

Other finalists included Elon Musk, who was last year’s winner; protesters in Iran; China’s leader Xi Jinping; and the United States Supreme Court.

Time editor Edward Felsenthal wrote that “In a world that had come to be defined by its divisiveness, there was a coming together around this cause, around this country.” He added that the spirit of Ukraine referred to its diaspora who assisted its war efforts behind the scenes, such as Ievgen Klopotenko, a chef who provided thousands of free meals to Ukrainians, and medic Yuliia Payevska who was captured, then released after three months in Russian captivity; and British trauma surgeon David Nott, who went into Ukraine to help those injured in the war.

The magazine said Zelensky had inspired Ukrainians and was recognized internationally for his courage in resisting the Russian invasion.

In other end-of-year recognitions, women in Iran were Time‘s 2022 heroes of the year; K-pop band Blackpink was recognized as entertainer of the year; American baseball outfielder Aaron Judge was recognized as Athlete of the Year and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh is the Icon of the Year.

The tradition began in 1927 as Man of the Year; past winners have included most American presidents since the founding of the magazine, either before or during their presidency, as well as former dictator of Germany, Adolf Hitler, in 1938, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2007.
