International News: Jamaica renews state of emergency due to gang violence

Posted: Wednesday, December 28, 2022. 1:49 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness renewed the state of emergency in 8 parishes, Reuters report.

Last month, the Prime Minister announced the regional states of emergency, which allow authorities to search buildings and arrest citizens without a warrant.

“While we have had reasonable success in controlling the number of murders leading up to and during the Christmas season, the threat levels for ongoing gang conflicts … (remain) elevated and extensive in scale,” Holness stated.

According to Police Commissioner, Antony Anderson the country recorded an average of almost five murders per day in September.

Officials say that the state of emergency is working to help decrease violent crimes.

In 2021, there were 1,463 murders in Jamaica with gang activity accounting for 71%.

Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the region.
