By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Belmopan Area Representative and Minister of State in the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security, Oscar Mira issued a statement extending condolences to the families reeling from the loss of their loved ones.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of David and Jon Ramnarace, whose lives were tragically taken in the double murder in Belmopan City on New Year’s Eve. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of Michael Williams, whose life was tragically taken in a similar manner on December 30th, 2022. My thoughts and prayers are with all those grieving this loss,” Mira stated.

Mira also extended get-well wishes for Vivian Belisle Ramnarace, Yemi Alberto, Selvin Teck, and Giovanni Sosa, who were injured in the incidents surrounding these acts of violence.

Mira says that on New Year’s Day, he met with Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams to chart a way forward.

“We agreed that starting immediately, there would be a continuous police presence in the Maya Mopan area and as soon as this week, a permanent Police Substation manned 24 hours a day would be established in the area along with its own mobile.

Furthermore the commissioner assured me that the investigation would be thorough and without bias, and may the chips fall where they may,” Mira added.

Mira further asked all Belizeans to pray for the victims of these tragedies.

“To end I would like to ask for prayers for all the victims of these tragedies, especially for Giovanni Sosa Melhado who is a valued member of our Salvapan community, the same community I grew up in and who is one of the gentlest person I know. My heart aches for all of the victims,” Mira said.

Mira says that Belmopan is grieving but the relevant authorities are working to ensure that violence does not continue.

“Our plans are solid and will bear fruit. Belmopan deserves peace and tranquility,” he ended.
