International News: Mexico’s DEA chief removed after “friendly” interaction with drug lawyers

Posted: Friday, January 27, 2023. 4:34 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last year, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration removed its top official in Mexico following improper contact with attorneys for narcotraffickers, the Associated Press reports.

According to the report, Nicholas Palmeri had been socializing and vacationing with Miami drug attorneys contributing to his downfall only a year being DEA’s powerful regional director.

In addition, there had been complaints of Palmeri’s lax handling of the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in 2 sick agents having to be airlifted out of the country.

Reports also say that Palmeri approved use of drug-fighting funds for inappropriate purposes and sought to be reimbursed to pay for his own birthday party.

Palmeri and his wife reportedly vacationed at attorney David Macey’s Florida home and that trip, the DEA said served no useful work purpose and violated rules governing interactions with attorneys that are designed to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

Palmeri was allowed to retire and the DEA maintains that the agency “has zero tolerance for improper contacts between defense attorneys and DEA employees.”
