Close to 150 youths and community members participated in National Kriol Council’s traditional games fun day

By Benjamin Flowers: The “Yaabra” field was teeming with community spirit today as close to 150 youths along with parents and other community members showed up for the traditional Kriol games fun day, hosted by the National Kriol Council (NKC).

The event, held in honor of the late Artist Emeritus Myrna Manzanares, ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and featured games such as the wheelbarrow race, marbles, lime and spoon, and sack race.

Many youths came with their parents, while other elders from the community showed up simply to support and assist. Volunteers from Wesley junior College were also on hand to assist with the day’s events.

DeShawn Dawson, Treasurer for the NKC and one of the organizers of the event, said that the attendance and level of participation exceeded the council’s expectations, and highlights the possibility of unification. She added that the event also found great success in showing youths how to have a good time without the use of electronic devices.

“When it was time for them to team up they had excellent team-building skills. So it shows that the community can get together and socialize and support each other when it comes to these events,” Dawson said. “So it was something that can show that we can move away from these tablets and phones and have clean fun and come together as one.”

There was also a kite-making workshop and soccer tournament held at the event. Participants also received medals for winning in various events, through sponsorships from the Belize City Council, National Institute for Culture and History (NICH), Ideal IT & Bookkeeping Services, and Zeta Ice Factory.

The NKC will now begin preparations for other events on its calendar, which include a drumming camp and a language camp.
