Verdict in Kareem Martinez manslaughter case delayed as court hears additional testimony and submissions

Posted: Tuesday, March 14, 2023. 3:54 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Those expecting a verdict today in the manslaughter trial of Kareem Martinez before Justice Antoinette Moore were disappointed as the court recalled a ballistics expert for further testimony.

The expert was asked to discuss the behavior of a fired bullet in the air potentially impacting someone at distance. She stated that generally speaking, once fired a bullet comes back to earth due to gravity but other factors such as atmospheric conditions and the position of the victim are also a factor.

In this case, a nine-millimeter bullet fired at an angle ten feet from the ground at a target approximately 90 feet away was less likely to hit the target given its power and kinetic energy. The nine-millimeter is one of the most powerful of all bullets and is capable of traveling at great distance and causing significant injury.

The expert said she could not comment on the likelihood raised by defense counsel Oscar Selgado that two shots fired simultaneously could be heard as one explosion but allow that it was possible.

Further submissions will now be made followed by a time for the verdict in the case.

Senior Crown Counsel Javier Chan is prosecuting, assisted by Richard “Dickie” Bradley.
