Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association holds Market Day on Friday in Orange Walk highlighting woman empowerment, reduction of child labour

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCPA) is having a Market Day on Friday at its headquarters in Trial Farm, Orange Walk. The PSCPA Market Day seeks to highlight woman empowerment and reduction of child labour.

PSCPA’s Monitoring Officer of Social Issues at Progressive Dean Sosa said 16 participants in the United Nations Development Program’s GEF Small Grants Program (SGP) funded project will be showcasing their businesses on Friday.

According to Sosa, the PSCPA, which is an organization that promotes woman empowerment and reduction of child labour, submitted a proposal to SGP and received funds to facilitate the training for women and youths during an entire year so they could develop their business proposals.

“All those people under this program were granted a specific amount for them to become an entrepreneur based on a proposal that each one of them had to submit,” Sosa said of the participants in the project entitled ‘Improving Agroecological Practices and Integrating Gender Equality, Women and Youth in Climate Smart Agriculture’.

“The highlights of this project are creating entrepreneurship for women and young children that are prone to becoming a field workers and cane cutters. We do create awareness and supervise that our farmers are not engaging in child labour.”

Sosa said that during the training sessions throughout the year the participants learnt about packaging of different materials, creation of logos, marketing strategies, and other aspects of creating a business.

“All 16 participants will be here in Friday showcasing all the different products that they have such as poultry, tilapia farming, green houses that produce organic products, some of them have backyard gardens that produce also compost and different fully organic vegetables,” Sosa said.

“There’s the young boy doing pig farming who increased from 7 to 50 something pigs.”

Sosa said that local businesses will also be represented during the PSCPA Market Day doing promotions and giveaways.

“It’s pretty much the conclusion of the Small Grants Program project that we’re having on Friday,” Sosa concluded.

The fair will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
