ComPol laments that disgraced policeman cannot be summarily dismissed after bus theft

By Aaron Humes: Even a normally loquacious Commissioner of Police Chester Williams had no words – or at least printable ones he could say publicly – to describe and condemn the behaviour of a Police Corporal who stole money from a bus conductor’s bag and tried to lie about it.

Eventually, he told reporters that “I really wish that I could just write a letter and sign it and tell the man “You are dismissed.” But unfortunately, we have a system that requires due process, and so the matter is with PSB (Professional Standards Branch). That police officer was interdicted from duty. I expect that by the end of the day the P.S.B. should be leveling charges on him internally because I’m told that the bus owners do not want any criminal action.”

The officer, who was in uniform, is accused of taking the money from the conductor’s cash bag and hiding it in his private area, then keeping silent when the bus’s owner and others questioned him. The incident was said to have taken place in Orange Walk Town last week, not far from the bus terminal site.

And while this sin is egregious, the Commissioner maintained that the forthcoming tribunal will be fair: “…we will ensure that the tribunal is heard in the most expeditious manner while still providing him with his right to due process because I wouldn’t want that we do something that he ends up appealing and has to come back. I don’t think that policeman should ever be allowed to wear the police uniform again. That is saying what I have to say in the most cautious way I possibly can….to make matters worse is that he wore a police uniform at that particular moment. It’s extremely embarrassing.”
