Elmer Nah defends himself in court as unlicensed ammunition trial continues

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Corporal Elmer Nah, who, apart from being charged for the New Year’s Eve 2022 triple homicide in Belmopan, is battling a charge of kept unlicensed ammunition in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Cpl. Nah is jointly charged along with Epiphania Caliz, his common-law wife, and her brother Police Constable Manuel Caliz.

Nah defended himself in court this week, calling his first witness Cpl. Richard Arnold, one of his colleagues from the Belize Police Department once assigned along with him to the Commander Operations Strike Team (COST).

In his defence Nah said that the 139 live rounds of ammunition that police found in the vehicle he was driving during a search in 2021 were not his.

During his testimony, Cpl. Arnold took responsibility for the ammunition, explaining that they were assigned to him by the police department for operations but he forgot to take them out of the vehicle before he loaned his vehicle to Nah.

Cpl. Arnold was cross-examined by Alifah Elrington who asked if he ever gave the statement he told the court to the police. Arnold responded that he gave several statements to as many as three officers.

The case was further adjourned for June 12, 2023, when the defense’s case will continue. The defense has indicated that they will be calling two other witnesses before closing their case.

At the trial, Manuel Caliz is represented by Attorney Leeroy Banner while Epiphania Caliz is represented by attorney Dickie Bradley while Nah is unrepresented.
