International News: 30 dead, thousands homeless after weekend of heavy rains in Haiti

Posted: Monday, June 5, 2023. 9:01 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over the weekend, torrential rains caused flooding in Haiti leaving 30 people dead, 9 missing and over 13,300 homeless.

According to the Miami Herald, the heavy rains caused flooding of about 7,500 homes across several departments.

“The biggest impact was the West” region, Chandler said, referring to the area that encompasses the capital. Other regions in the environmentally vulnerable country that saw heavy damage were: the Northwest; the Nippes; and the Southeast, where a boat capsized Saturday morning that resulted in the death of two passengers. Fourteen others were rescued.

“In the Center department, the agricultural sector is very impacted,” Haiti’s disaster response agency noted.

Several roads were cut off by flooding and emergency response teams have been mobilized to support affected communities.
