In March, 2021, the residents of San Ignacio and Santa Elena elected UDP Mayor Earl Trapp, UDP Councilor Bernadette Fernandez and 5 PUP councilors namely, Matthew Preston Silva, Aaron Mai, Shirlene Neal, Zahir Figueroa and Omar Rodriguez.

There is much speculation that the PUP’s Mayoral candidate for the Twin Towns is Matthew Preston Silva.

Having come from a generation of reputable politicians that have cemented their legacy in the history of El Cayo, Preston Silva has the support of his grand-uncle, former Mayor, senator and cabinet minister, Hector Silva and his uncle, former cabinet minister, Daniel Silva Sr.

Among his many accomplishments, ‘Don Hector’ as he is affectionately known is recognized for his efforts in bringing water and electricity to El Cayo in the 1960s when he was the Mayor and worked alongside Father of the Nation, George Cadle Price.

His nephew, Daniel Silva Sr. served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Area Representative in Cayo Central. During his tenure in office, Silva Sr. was instrumental in the establishment of Santa Elena Roman Catholic School, St. Ignatius High School and Galen University. His legacy spans from providing low-income houses to the residents to establishing the Peter August Race track and expanding cattle production to boost Belize’s economy.

As Preston-Silva serves as councilor for the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council, he is building on the Silva’s legacy and commitment to make the Twin Towns a better place for the youths and all residents.

Preston-Silva is actively engaged in promoting youth sporting programs, MSME expos and workshops to provide capacity building and job readiness for our residents.
