By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she will step down on Friday as Mayor.
Sheinbaum is reportedly seeking the ruling party’s presidential nomination, bidding to become the country’s first female leader in an election due to be held next year.
According to Reuters, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) would announce their candidate on September 6.
Mayor Sheinbaum is reportedly one of their favorites. She is a scientist and an environmentalist.
“It’s the time for women,” Sheinbaum said, pledging to continue Lopez Obrador’s so-called ‘transformation’ of Mexico.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard also announced that he was stepping down in order to launch his candidacy for the Presidential election.
