International News: Human rights report indicate that extreme heat ‘disproportionately’ impacts people with disabilities

Posted: Monday, June 26, 2023. 2:11 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a report that cited that people with disabilities in Spain and other European countries have been disproportionately affected by unprecedented heat extremes.

According to Reuters, the report indicated that people with disabilities faced risk of death, physical, social, and mental health distress due to extreme heat.

In addition, having to stay home due to the heat can also lead to social isolation.

The report noted that lack of representation in the process of developing heatwave emergency plans meant the voices of people with disabilities were often not heard and their needs not included.

Countries in Europe continue to experience record breaking heatwaves.

In 2022, heatwaves led to about 16,000 excess deaths in Europe.
