By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a shocking incident, a 57-year-old Thai woman’s leg was amputated following a horrific accident involving a moving walkway at the Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok, as per reports from Yahoo News.

The incident took place on Thursday morning, around 8:27 a.m. local time, in the southern corridor of the airport’s domestic passenger terminal. The woman, on her way to the southern city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, was severely injured when her left leg was trapped at the end of the moving walkway.

Airport director, Karant Thanakuljeerapat, detailed the events at a news conference later in the day, explaining that the woman was promptly provided with medical assistance and transferred to a nearby hospital. However, due to the severity of her injuries, her leg had to be amputated up to the kneecap.

“I would like to convey our deepest sorrow,” a regretful Karant told the press, extending the airport authorities’ sympathies to the woman and her family.

The woman has since been moved to Bumrungrad International Hospital, one of the premier medical facilities in the country, for further treatment and care. Her son, Krit Kittirattana, shared a heartfelt statement on Facebook, calling the accident “heartbreaking” and highlighting the strength his mother has shown in this trying time.

Krit also stated that the family has requested surveillance camera footage of the accident and is waiting anxiously for the cause of the incident to be revealed.

In response, Karant confirmed that the state-owned company, Airports Of Thailand (AOT), which operates airports across the nation, would cover all the medical expenses and offer compensation to the woman. He also mentioned that the operation of all moving walkways at the airport has been suspended pending investigation and necessary safety checks.

The incident’s investigation is still underway, with Karant suggesting the potential formation of a fact-finding committee for impartiality and transparency. He also added that the available CCTV footage is from a distance, causing a delay in the investigation process.

Don Mueang International Airport, one of the two international airports in Bangkok, is renowned as a significant transit point for travelers to the popular tourist destination. The incident has caused ripples of concern, raising questions about the safety of the airport’s infrastructure, despite Karant’s assurances of routine maintenance and checks.

Thailand’s tourism industry, previously accounting for approximately 12% of the nation’s economy, has begun to recover from the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, Thailand surpassed its tourist target with over 6.15 million arrivals, making this incident a cause for concern for the authorities.
