Deer hunting season is now closed; other species like peccary, some game birds are also off limits

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Forest Department of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Disaster Risk Management announced that hunting season for White Tail/Red Brocket Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and other Game Species is closed as of July 1, 2023. Hunting for other animals such as the peccary, a number of game birds, iguana, armadillo, hicatee, and gibnut remains closed.

The following species are not allowed to be hunted or sold during their respective closed seasons as outlined below:

• White Tail/Red Brocket Deer (Odocoileus virginianus):

Males: July 1 to September 30 (2023)

Females: July 1 to February 28 (2024)

• Peccary (Tayassu pecari): June 1 to November 30

• Game Birds (Chachalaca, Black Throated Bobwhite, Great Curassow, Lesser Scaup, Crested Guan, Blue Winged Teal): February 1 to July 15

• Iguana (Iguana iguana): February 1 to June 30

• Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus): February 1 to June 30

• Hicatee (Dermatemys mawii) May 1 to 31

• Gibnut (Cuniculus paca): December 1 to May 31

According to the Forest Department, closed seasons are essential for wildlife conservation and population recovery. Hunting during closed seasons can lead to wildlife depletion and extinction. By respecting closed seasons, we help to preserve wildlife for future generations.

The Forest Department also reminds everyone that a Hunter’s License is required for hunting, and a Dealer’s License is required for buying or selling the above game species outside of their closed seasons. The fees for these licenses are as follows:

– Annual Hunter’s License BZ $100

– Annual Dealer’s License BZ $1000

– 3-Day Dealer’s License BZ $100
