By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a significant development for the Belizean education community, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MoECST) officially bid farewell to the outgoing president of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), Senator Elena Smith. The ministry also welcomed the new BNTU president, Mrs. Ruth Shoman, who took office on July 1, 2023.

Senator Smith’s leadership has been an emblem of dedication and commitment to the country’s educational community and the nation at large. Her term of office was marked by her unwavering resolve to advocate for educators’ rights and children’s access to quality education in Belize. The ministry, in its farewell address, expressed deep gratitude for Senator Smith’s service.

In the official statement, the MoECST thanked Senator Smith for her “dedicated service and commitment to our education community and country during her term of office.” The ministry extended its warm wishes to her and her family as she embarks on her journey beyond her tenure as the president of the BNTU.

In a parallel development, the MoECST seized the opportunity to usher in a new era of leadership by welcoming the new president of the BNTU, Mrs. Ruth Shoman. President Shoman’s ascension to the role marks a pivotal moment for the BNTU and Belizean education.

“We look forward to a constructive, respectful, and productive working partnership with President Shoman, the Executive Committee, and Council of Management,” the ministry said in its statement. The incoming leadership is expected to continue the forward momentum in improving the educational landscape in Belize under Shoman’s presidency.

As the MoECST looks to the future, it remains committed to supporting the BNTU in its critical role within the Belizean education system. The anticipated collaboration between the MoECST and the newly appointed president, along with the BNTU’s Executive Committee and Council of Management, is a testament to the collaborative spirit of the Belizean educational community.

The upcoming tenure of President Shoman holds promising potential for the continued development of education in Belize, while Senator Smith’s legacy of service will continue to inspire all those who endeavor to advance the cause of education in the country.
