International News: United Nations says world just experienced “hottest week on record”

Posted: Monday, July 10, 2023. 11:24 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that the first week of July saw the hottest week on record globally.

“The world just had the hottest week on record, according to preliminary data,” the WMO noted.

The WMO also indicated that temperatures are breaking records both on land and in oceans.

“We are in uncharted territory and we can expect more records to fall as El Nino develops further and these impacts will extend into 2024,” said Christopher Hewitt, WMO Director of Climate Services.

In 2022, over 61,000 people died due to the heat during Europe’s record-breaking summer, CBS reports.

The World Met Organization also said that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, would be the warmest on record due to El Nino and anthropogenic global warming.

Several countries around the world have experienced extreme heatwaves and droughts this year.
