By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In the longest and most riveting game of the XIV Under 19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship, Belize bounced back twice to beat archrivals Guatemala in five sets (16-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-12, 15-13) on Friday.
Nisaan Martinez scored 31 points and Khaya Gordon came up with 26 to lead the team to victory after dropping the first and third sets. Guatemalan Naomi Monney scored 23 points and Dulce Trigueño added 15.
In total, Belize won the game 102-93 racking up 62 points from their attacks to Guatemala’s 46. This is where Belize won the game since Guatemala nearly tipped the scale by gaining ten more points than Belize from opponents ‘ errors 35-25. The other two categories were very similar with Belize edging Guatemala 7-5 in serves though the teams were dead even in blocks with seven each.
Belize now has four wins and one loss and are in second place behind Costa Rica who moved up to 5-0 after beating El Salvador 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-9) in the first game on Friday.
For their part, Nicaragua blanked Honduras 3-0 (25-21, 25-7, 25-16) in their last game and secured third place with a 4-2 record.
Panama rested on Friday.
