Dangerous TikTok trend encourages drinking borax

Posted: Sunday, July 23, 2023. 6:28 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Borax, a powdered substance often used for cleaning, is found in many laundry detergents and sold independently as a cleaning agent. A variation of the same compound boron, known as boric acid, is often used as an insecticide.

Despite its ban on U.S. food products, several TikTok “health influencers” are falsely advising their followers to add a pinch of borax to their drinking water, suggesting it can reduce inflammation and assist with joint pain. They also claim that soaking in a borax-filled bathtub can “detoxify” the body. Since this trend started, many influencers have called for these misleading videos to be taken down.

Dr. Johnson-Arbor, a toxicology physician and co-medical director at the National Capital Poison Center, frequently publishes articles correcting health misinformation. She warns that “borax can cause stomach irritation and potentially lead to blue-green vomit or diarrhea if ingested. Over time, it can cause anemia and seizures”. She also notes that “soaking in borax could cause rashes that make the skin appear as bright pink as a boiled lobster and start to fall off.”

As health misinformation continues to pervade TikTok’s “For You” page, an increasing number of medical professionals are striving to alert and educate people both on and off the platform about the dangers of these so-called instant remedy solutions.
