By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Human Trafficking impacts every country in the world. It is a crime that exploits women, children and men for forced labour and sex.
Every year, World Day against Human Trafficking is observed on July 30 to raise awareness and #EndHumanTrafficking.
This year’s theme is “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind”.
Since 2003, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has collected information on about 225,000 victims of trafficking detected worldwide.
Around the world, more countries are detecting and reporting victims.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Belize recently hosted a panel discussion on how to reach every victim and leave no one behind.
During the session, Minister of State Elvia Vega Samos remarked, “We want to conquer the indifference towards the vulnerable communities and survivor- victims of human trafficking and renew our commitments towards the ongoing work we have. ”
The campaign to end human trafficking calls on governments, law enforcement, public services, and civil society to assess and enhance their efforts to strengthen prevention, identify and support victims, and end impunity.
