Shooting in Corozal: Man fights for life after violent attack

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man was left in serious condition following an unprovoked attack by an unknown assailant in Corozal Town on Thursday, July 27th, 2023. The incident, according to the Corozal Police, occurred around 8:10 pm on G Street.

The 34-year-old victim, who works as a laborer in Orange Walk Town, was reportedly waiting for his common-law partner outside an apartment building when an unidentified man emerged from behind a neighboring house and opened fire.

Authorities found the victim conscious but in obvious pain around 8:15 pm. He was lying about thirty feet from the street side in an unfenced yard, dressed in a white shirt and dark-colored pants.

Officers at the scene identified multiple gunshot wounds across the victim’s body. He was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital in an ambulance and later transferred to the Northern Regional Hospital.

The assailant reportedly fled the scene in the direction from which he came, disappearing towards the other side of the street. As of this report, the suspect remains unidentified and at large.

At the scene of the attack, authorities found a total of 16 expended 7.62-caliber shells.

The Corozal Police Department has launched a full investigation into the incident. However, initial inquiries have yielded little useful information. The absence of surveillance equipment in the area means there is no footage of the incident, and no eyewitnesses have yet come forward with substantial leads.

The victim’s common-law partner was reportedly the person he had come to pick up from the apartment. Her statement has not yet been recorded.

The Corozal Police Department is urging the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspect, ensuring that justice can be served swiftly and appropriately. As the investigation into this incident continues, the Corozal community remains shocked and eagerly awaiting answers.
