Tragic farm accident claims the life of a retired teacher in Sittee River Village

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A tragic accident at a family farm in Sittee River Village claimed the life of 73-year-old Stephen Serrano Sr., a Belizean retired teacher and resident of Dangriga Town.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 31st, 2023 when Mr. Serrano Sr. was operating a red Massey Ferguson tractor with a bush hog attachment to clear some bushes on the family farm. According to his son, Stephen Serrano Jr., 39, who was working on another area of the farm, he went to look for his father when he realized that the tractor had gone silent.

Upon discovering the tractor stuck in the bush, Mr. Serrano Jr. found his father’s motionless body on the ground, approximately 20 feet from the tractor. The elder Serrano had suffered extensive injuries, including a fractured right arm, a large cut wound behind the head, a significant open wound to the right side of the abdomen, a large cut wound to the right heel, and abrasions to the chest area.

Mr. Serrano Sr. was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital (SRH) but was pronounced dead upon arrival at 2:49 pm by Dr. Andrea Coleman.

Scene of Crime personnel, led by Martin Rodriguez, visited and processed the scene. Photographs were taken of the red Massey Ferguson tractor, and apparent bloodstains were found, with blood swabs collected for further examination.

Preliminary police investigation reveals that Mr. Serrano Sr. appears to have fallen off his tractor, subsequently being run over, and the blade of the bush hog caused the injuries that resulted in his death. Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected.

Mr. Serrano Sr., born on September 1st, 1949, was a well-known retired teacher in Dangriga Town. He is survived by his family, who are mourning the loss of a beloved father and community member.

The body is currently at the SRH morgue, pending a post-mortem examination.
