Common-law wife drops ‘damage to property’ charge against Police Officer; Old fine comes back to haunt

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Police Officer working with the Conscious Youth Development Program Leadership Intervention Unit (CYDP-LIU) focusing on at-risk youths, found himself in front of the court on Monday but was ultimately released after events turned in his favour.

The Police Officer who lives in Mahogany Heights Village was charged with damage to property, a case involving his common-law wife with whom he had a domestic dispute.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, August 11, 2023, resulted in the Officer allegedly causing damages to a glass window and a glass light bulb cover, both valued at $150 each, for a total of $300.

Appearing unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court, the Officer pleaded not guilty to the charge. His common-law wife then appeared in court requesting no further action against him. When questioned, the common-law wife assured the court that she was not forced or promised anything in return for withdrawing the charge, and that she was doing so on her own free will.

With no further evidence provided by the Prosecutor, the Senior Magistrate dismissed the charge. However, an old outstanding bill of $150 to the court had to be paid before the Officer could leave the court. The Officer was able to pay the outstanding fine and was released.

A number of police officers appeared in court to show their support for the Officer who was charged.
