Agriculture Ministers of Belize and El Salvador discuss Agricultural Trade and Technical Cooperation

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:  On August 17, 2023, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Mai returned from El Salvador where he met with Minister of Agriculture Oscar Guardado.

The meeting was made possible through Ambassador to El Salvador, Cherie Nisbet.

Discussions included Agricultural Trade and Technical Cooperation with Belize.

Minister Guardado and his team proposed the idea of contracting Belizean farmers to produce certain amount of acres of corn and red beans.

They have the variety of beans seed required but are unable to produce in El Salvador.

A similar proposal for white corn was also shared.

CEO Baeza updated the minister and his team on Belize’s production statistics.

Minister Mai expressed his gratitude to Minister Eamon Courtenay and Ambassador Nisbet for being extremely supportive in opening trade with Central American neighbors.

Minister Guardado plans to visit Belize in a few weeks with his delegation to continue the discussion.
