Minister of Foreign Affairs spearheads first-ever international cooperation council meeting

Posted: Monday, September 4, 2023. 6:12 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a groundbreaking event today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration, in tandem with the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development & Investment, took a monumental stride by hosting the maiden meeting of the International Cooperation Council (ICC). The convocation was chaired by Eamon Courtenay, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade & Immigration.

The convening of the ICC represents a pivotal juncture in Belize’s diplomatic landscape. It offered a much-needed platform for the concerned ministries to delve deep into pragmatic discussions. Key on the agenda was the streamlined utilization of foreign aid, ensuring the alignment of global alliances with Belize’s Plan Belize Medium-Term Development Strategy, and the identification of mutual areas of synergy.

It’s worth noting that while the ICC’s prime objective revolves around bolstering inter-ministerial synergies for enhanced developmental collaboration, it has a broader vision in its sights. The council is well-positioned to act as a catalyst for augmenting Belize’s engagement with its international counterparts in the times to come. Through such initiatives, Belize aims to optimize the dividends it gains from international cooperation, thereby ensuring consistent national growth.

Belize, with open arms, invites global collaborators and institutions to synergize with the ICC. This partnership aims at augmenting Belize’s journey towards achieving sustainable development milestones and solidifying its global alliances.

Joining Minister Courtenay at this inaugural gathering was Prime Minister John Briceño, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment; Christopher Coye, Minister of State for the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development & Investment; Ambassador Amalia Mai, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade; and Dr. Osmond Martinez, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Economic Development. Their presence highlighted the importance of this landmark meeting.
