By Breaking Belize News Staff: A historic bust at the entrance to the Philip Goldson Highway became the latest casualty in a string of traffic accidents, as a reportedly intoxicated taxi driver collided with it in the early hours of this morning.
At approximately 3:00 AM, a taxi minivan veered off course on the roundabout leading to the Philip Goldson Highway and collided head-on with the bust of the revered national figure, Philip Goldson. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported the taxi driver appeared drunk, showing signs of staggering upon emerging from the vehicle.
Police were swift to respond, and the driver, identified as Mervin Elvis Domingo, was taken into custody. Authorities announced that Domingo was facing two charges in connection with the accident: “Drove motor vehicle without due care and attention” and “Drove a motor vehicle with an alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit”.
Residents and officials alike have expressed their dismay at the damage to the bust, a longstanding symbol of national pride.
Authorities have taken this incident as an opportunity to remind the public of the dangers of drinking and driving.
Philip Goldson, whom the highway and bust commemorate, is celebrated for his contributions to Belizean national identity and independence. The desecration of his memorial serves as a somber reminder of the consequences that reckless actions can have on shared cultural heritage.
The court date for Domingo has not yet been announced. If convicted, he could face hefty fines, license suspension, and possible jail time.
