CARICOM extends warm congratulatory message to Belize on its 42nd Independence anniversary

By Horace Palacio: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Belize on the occasion of its 42nd Independence Anniversary celebrated on Thursday, September 21, 2023. In a statement released on the organization’s website, Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett lauded Belize’s efforts in combating climate change and advocating for natural resource protection. The news comes as a significant morale booster for Belizeans as they celebrate another milestone year of independence under the theme “Hope Ignited, Hands United, Vision Renewed: Belize@42.”

Dr. Barnett’s congratulatory message to Prime Minister John Briceño covered various dimensions of Belize’s national achievements and contributions to the Caribbean community. She specifically commended the country on its commitment to sustainable development, stating that Belize remains a strong voice in the fight against climate change and is an advocate for the protection of natural resources for future generations.

In her statement, Dr. Barnett also highlighted Belize’s recent achievement of malaria-free recognition and certification from the World Health Organization (WHO), noting it as a testament to the country’s commitment to improving public health. “This remains a priority for the Caribbean Community,” she added.

Acknowledging Belize’s regional contributions, the Secretary-General expressed gratitude for the country’s invaluable role in CARICOM’s regional integration movement. She noted that Belize has been a dedicated member and that its participation has been pivotal to the success of many key initiatives. Belize is particularly active in matters pertaining to Justice and Governance, areas where it leads responsibility in the Quasi-Cabinet of the Conference of Heads of Government.

Dr. Barnett further mentioned that Belize continues to be a strong advocate for the Community’s strategic partnership with Central America, underlining the essential role the country plays in fostering regional relationships.

“Honourable Prime Minister, I look forward to continued cooperation between the Government of Belize and CARICOM towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for all our people, and extend wishes for the peace, prosperity, and progress of the entire nation,” Dr. Barnett concluded.

With regional backing and growing recognition for its sustainable efforts, Belize looks ahead to more years of independence, progress, and contribution both at home and within the Caribbean community.
