Belize City man sentenced to 3 months in jail for Facebook scam

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man has been sentenced to 3 months in jail after he was caught up in a Facebook scam which swindled a businessman out of a cell phone he was selling.

Dane Grinage, 39, appeared in court unrepresented and was read a single charge of obtaining property by deception. Since it was his second conviction for a crime of a similar nature, instead of a fine, the Magistrate imposed a 3 month prison sentence.

According to reports, a businessman posted his cellphone valued at $300 for sale on Facebook marketplace and was contacted by a user on Facebook who was interested in the phone. The $300 was deposited into his account and he delivered the phone to Soaring Store on Central American Boulevard where Grinage collected the phone. 

The following day, the seller of the phone was contacted by another man who said he had deposited the $300 into his account for a mattress he purchased on Facebook marketplace. That’s when police got involved and launched an investigation leading to Grinage’s arrest.

Grinage, however, maintains that he was only doing a favor for a friend, whom he only knows on Facebook and had no idea the phone was stolen. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
