Galen University breaks ground for new STEM Lab

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On October 10, 2023, Galen University hosted a ceremony to commemorate the groundbreaking for its Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) LAB on the university campus at mile 64 George Price Highway.

 “The objective of this project is to modernize our Central Farm Campus by installing a fully equipped and state of the art STEM-AI Laboratory, teaching, and research facility. This new facility will greatly enhance the University’s ability to perform timely and accurate training in STEM Education, AI Research & Development work, and current active scientific research fields such as climate change in Belize and the region.” said Dr. Dorian Barrow, Dean of the Faulty of Education at Galen University.

“The project consists of a new complex with classrooms, finance office, and support facilities. The buildings are designed so they can be relocated in the future. The landscape will include a courtyard, social spaces as well as gardens” explained Richmond So, the project Architect.

Galen’s new STEM Lab is another concrete step taken by Galen to support and promote STEM education in Belize.

 In August 2023, Galen offered a 3-day training session for STEM teachers from across the country.

The training was a collaboration between Galen University and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST), facilitated by Noemi Waight, PhD, Shakhnoza Kayumova, PhD, and Jennifer Tripp, PhD.

Galen University offers bachelor’s degree programs in Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as Diploma Programs in English, Math, Physics, Business Administration, Belizean Studies, Computer Science and Pedagogy.
