Police Department works to address welfare issues with officers affected by disaster

By Aaron Humes: Like many Belizeans, police officers are not immune from natural disasters, and the Belize Police Department is caring for those who put their lives on the line to care for the rest of us.

Speaking last week, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams noted that police officers are among recent victims of fires, floods, and even last November’s Hurricane Lisa. Concerns are addressed to the Department’s office of welfare in Belmopan headed by Superintendent of Police Sherlet Ramclam, though some complaints inevitably cross the desk of the Commissioner himself.

At the moment, however, there is an issue with reconciling monies awarded as grants to officers from the Police Trust Fund. These are not to be paid back to the Department as opposed to a loan but there has been a holdup in their disbursement: “…we’re still trying to see when we can deal with the whole issue of the consolidation of the Police Trust Fund … while I have approved or made recommendation to the subcommittee of the trust fund to approve the loan or the grant to those officers, we have not been able to disperse the approved funds to them because we need to consolidate that account. So, we’re hoping that within the next few weeks, we should be able to do that and those officers would be able to get what [they are entitled to].”
