Maya Centre Women’s Group celebrate 35 years of existence

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On November 26, 2023, the Maya Centre Women’s Group celebrated 35 years of existence.

Since the establishment of Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve, much has been accomplished.

In 1983, the people who were living in the Cockscomb range were forcibly removed to make way for the establishment of the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve.

The Belize Audubon Society then took over the management of the Park and those that moved were not compensated.

Therefore, the Maya Center Women’s group was established by Ernesto Saqui, the first Park Director and village council Chairman.

Saqui recognized the need to empower women of that Mopan Community.

During the celebration for the 35 year mark, former chair women were recognized along with Ernesto Saqui and Heliadora Saqui a former chair lady of the group.

The event was celebrated with marimba music, traditional food and with local artisans displaying their products.
