By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On November 29, 2023, Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Francis Fonseca and Yolanda Gongora, Chief Education Officer, joined Michelle Kwan, Ambassador of the United States to Belize, Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Belize Police Department for the launch of the Positive Engagement and Civic Education (PEACE) Programme for Belize.
A memorandum of understanding for the successful implementation of the programme was signed between the Ministry and the Belize Police Department.
The PEACE Programme replaces the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (GREAT).
The newly contextualised PEACE program reflects the realities of Belize and caters to children living under challenging circumstances or requiring specific support and guidance.
The new PEACE Programme will be taught by trained community-oriented Police Officers and teachers and targets middle division and upper division students.
Primary students will be immersed in learning experiences and sensitised on topics such as bullying and gang resistance and values such as empathy, respect and civic pride.
