Maya Forest Corridor Site Manager Yahaira Urbina completes Forest Fire Fighter course S-130

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last week, the Forest Fire Fighter Course S-130 concluded in Peten, Guatemala.

The Maya Forest Corridor Site Manager Yahaira Urbina completed the course.

Belizeans from Friends for Conservation and Development, and Ya’axché Conservation Trust (YCT) participated in the 5-day training that included certifying instructors in basic National Wildfire Coordinating Group courses.

The course promoted #GenderEquity as a cross-sectional pillar of work for the National Wildlife Coordinating Group.

The only woman participant from Belize, Yahaira expressed that “The course included various topics such as the use of tools and suppression tactics to combat forest fires and to enable us to train others within our home country. It was a lovely and very intense experience. The course has enabled us to open a door to Belize to have certified fire trainers and increase our capacity within the country. This is a steppingstone for us to have a number of individuals, including women, who will be able to assist with training of the personnel from various NGO’s and government agency partners that are involved in fire management.”

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) says it is confident that Yahaira will be able to enable additional trainers in fire management, including Maya Forest Corridor Coalition partners.

The session was supported by US Forest Service, Conred, Cuerpo de Bomberos Municipales Ciudad de Guatemala and Servicio Forestal de EUA en Guatemala y Belize.
