U.S. Ambassador and International Organization for Migration meet migrant artisanal vendors in Belmopan

This year’s theme is “Act Today.”

In celebration of International Migrant’s Day, U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan joined IOM Belize Chief of Mission Diana Locke at the Belmopan Night Market.

There, they met artisanal vendors who are migrants from other Central American countries.

The Integrated Responses on Migration in Central America Project (IRM), funded through the UN International Organization for Migrations (IOM) and USAID – US Agency for International Development , organized the participation of these vendors to highlight the essential role that migrants play in all aspects of society.

The United Nations note that people on the move are powerful drivers for development in both their origin and destination countries, as workers, students, entrepreneurs, family members, artists, and much more. Migrants often maintain strong connections to their home countries while embracing their new communities, where they bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and skill.
