Ministry of Economic Development, Second Road Safety Project Executing Unit call for Belizeans to be responsible during Christmas season

“The Christmas season is a time of celebration. Many of us go to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and spend time with family and friends. Many of us also take the celebration up a notch with parties. However you choose to celebrate, let us be responsible,” the Ministry of Economic Development and the Second Road Safety Project Executing Unit said in a statement on Thursday.

“As we traverse the streets and highways visiting family and friends during this holiday season, let us remember our responsibilities as road users. Pedestrians, be aware of your surroundings and ensure that the driver of a motor vehicle sees you before you attempt to cross the street, even at pedestrian ramps. Let us use the sidewalks where they exist and ensure that we hold the hands of our children and put them on the inside of the street, away from the traffic.”

Saying the streets are busy, the Ministry of Economic Development asked drivers to be courteous to pedestrians and exercise caution, particularly in the cities and towns.

“On the highways, there is no need for speed,” the statement said.

“Start your journey early enough to allow you to comply with the speed limit and still reach your destination as planned. Ensure that your lights are working if you plan to drive at night. For everyone’s safety, ensure that everyone wears their seatbelts when the vehicle is moving. It is now the law! Most of all, do not drive under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substance. The life you save might be your own.”
