Two police officers stabbed in separate incidents on same day

By Horace Palacio: In a troubling sequence of events, two police officers were stabbed in separate altercations on Thursday, December 21st, 2023, in different areas of Belize.

The first incident occurred in the evening in Red Bank Village, Stann Creek District. Police Officer Perfecto Tush, 34, suffered multiple stab wounds in a violent encounter that unfolded around 6:35 pm. Reports from the Intermediate Southern Formation (ISF) suggest the altercation began when Tush arrived at the Maya Mountain Grocery Shop, where a group of men, including Carmelo Cholom, were socializing. The situation escalated after Tush, feeling provoked, used pepper spray, leading to Cholom allegedly stabbing him multiple times. Jason Sho, a bystander attempting to intervene, was also stabbed.

Tush’s injuries are extensive, including severe cuts and stab wounds to his face, arm, and torso. Sho sustained a stab wound to his back. The scene was secured by the ISF, and Cholom, heavily intoxicated, was detained.

Later the same night, in Belize City, another police officer, Constable Faustino Makin, 27, was involved in a separate altercation. The incident took place near the Novelos Bus Terminal around 10:00 pm. Makin was discovered with a significant cut wound to his mouth following a misunderstanding with Richard Williams, a 69-year-old local believed to be mentally ill. Makin was promptly taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and is reported to be in stable condition.

These incidents, occurring just hours apart, have raised concerns about the safety of police officers and the challenges they face in the line of duty. Investigations are ongoing in both cases, as authorities work to understand the circumstances that led to these violent encounters.
