International News: Life in Gaza ‘turning children into skeletons’

Posted: Monday, January 8, 2024. 9:37 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The rising hunger situation in Gaza is turning children into skeletons.

UNICEF and other organizations continue to call for an immediate ceasefire and demand that aid be allowed to reach those in dire need.

Many children are going days without food and others have eaten nothing more than half a piece of pita bread or a can of beans.

When aid arrive in Gaza, children are seen jostling within crowds – buckets and pans in hand, pleading for food.

“We get one meal a day, it’s normally half a piece of pita bread,” says 13-year-old Ahmad as he waits for food in Rafah, alongside hundreds of others.

“There are no ingredients to help us live our lives. We just want to live. My relatives are dying before my eyes,” the child added.

Hundreds of thousands are suffering from malnutrition amidst the conflict.

“In all wars it is children who suffer first and suffer most,” UNICEF said.

UNICEF said that even wars have rules.

“No child should be cut off from essential services, nor fall from the reach of humanitarian hands. No child should be held hostage or used by any means in armed conflict. Hospitals and schools must be protected from bombings, and they must not be used for military purposes, in accordance with international humanitarian law. The cost to children and their communities of this violence will be borne out for generations to come,” the U.N. agency asserted.
