Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center moving to Belmopan

By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: Ground has been broken for the new location for the Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center in the Maya Mopan area of the New Capital.

The land was donated by the Reconstruction and Development Corporation (RECONDEV) and funding provided by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) through the Social Investment Fund (SIF) Third Loan Project.

According to CEO in the Office of the Prime Minister Narda Garcia, residents of the center, about 60 to 70, will have greater access to playgrounds, dormitories, and space to grow and develop, along with office and conference spaces. Built in will be access to persons with disabilities.

Area Representative Oscar Mira made note that the Maya Mopan area will also be hosting new office space for the Belize Police Department among others and hailed the development of an area set aside from central Belmopan.

Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous People’s Affairs Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, recalled the vision of the Center’s namesake, the wife of businessman Karl H. Menzies and among the first to host vulnerable Belizean children, and all those who have contributed to protecting Belize’s most vulnerable, whom she testified are coming hot and heavy, including the child abandoned yesterday following his mother’s murder.

But she preferred to envision the access to education nearby, the gardens the children will plant, and the space for the next generation to grow, for as they say of Belmopan, “If you stand too long there you will grow.”
