Anke Doehm found guilty of neglect in death of 13-year-old Fay Lin Cannon; remanded to jail while she awaits sentencing

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Anke Doehm, 63, the American woman who was charged with neglect in the shocking and brutal death of her own 13-year-old adopted daughter Fay Lin Cannon, was found guilty late on Monday evening and has been remanded to prison while she awaits sentencing in the crime.

Doehm appeared in court on Monday as the trial concluded. A panel of nine jurors took less than three hours to return a unanimous guilty verdict. Doehm was initially charged jointly with her husband, David Doehm, but he escaped jail time by committing suicide in a Belize City hotel in 2017.

Damning evidence was presented to the court by the Director of Public Prosecution, Cheryl Lynn Vidal in the form of gruesome photos that showed poor Cannon’s state at the time of her death. Her body was described as thin and frail. Medical records concluded she was malnourished and under-developed for her age.

Cannon’s sister also gave a virtual testimony to the court, in which she described seeing David Doehm stomping Cannon in the chest in front of Anke Doehm who only told David he could not do that before she left to go to Belize City. 

Cannon was not taken to a doctor, probably because of the amount of bruises on her body, Vidal told the court. A doctor certified that Cannon died from compression if the chest, which compromised her heart and lungs
